Q: Do you play a mt. dulcimer with those small drum sticks or do you strum it like a guitar.

 

A: A mountain dulcimer is strummed like a guitar.  The dulcimer is placed on your lap and the right hand strums with a pick while the left hand frets the notes. It is common to use a noter with a dulcimer. This is a wooden dowel that is used to fret in place of the fingers. There is a type of dulcimer played with sticks (called hammers). This is an entirely different beast called a "Hammered Dulcimer".
